Dig Deeper into the Construction of Smothers Elementary School | Washington, DC

Preserving and Enhancing A Piece of History in the DMV

Smothers Elementary School Washington DC

The Historic Smothers Elementary School, located East of the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, serves students from PK3 through 5th grade. Initially built in 1923, the school had subsequent additions in 1927 and 1938. Along with our joint venture partner, Chiaramonte Construction, we fully modernized the existing 3-story school, expanding its size from 43,400 SF to over 80,000 SF.

Construction included installing two additions, upgrading building systems, and site work. The addition of five bioponds addressed stormwater management, new playgrounds provide age-appropriate play areas, and a useable roof area offers an outdoor learning space with synthetic turf. Art installations adorn the property, complementing new interior spaces. Classrooms and learning areas received technological upgrades, new furniture, casework, flooring, ceilings, and acoustic treatments. The advancements improved the envelope’s efficiency and function while complimenting the building’s Historic elements.

Janice Szymanski from the DC Department of General Services (DGS) said, “The project was significant for DGS’ commitment to implementing quality education spaces across the District of Columbia, in all 8 Wards. Together, the team was able to construct the facility that contributes such a meaningful space to the DC community. I would like to congratulate Chiaramonte / Coakley & Williams Joint Venture on the success of the project. The students and staff at Smothers Elementary School are happy to be teaching and learning in their light-filled and inspiring facility.”

Building The Future Through Student Engagement

The construction team worked with the students to provide opportunities for them to leave their mark on the school. 5th-grade students participated in a time capsule ceremony on the grounds of the new school building, placing letters and pictures into the time capsule. The new school spaces were ready for students to enjoy for the 2022-2023 school year. The impressive modernization allows Smothers Elementary School to continue its mission of helping students reach their full potential through exciting learning experiences provided in a safe and nurturing environment.
