CWC Celebrates Milestone with a Time Capsule Ceremony at Smothers Elementary School in Washington, DC

Coakley & Williams Construction planned a time capsule ceremony for the 5th graders attending Smothers Elementary School in Washington, DC. The students spent half of their school day on the grounds of the new school building. Following the site visit, the students placed letters and pictures into the time capsule and buried them, to be opened at a later date.

The Impact of the new Smothers Elementary School

The students were accompanied by their teachers, some staff members, and school Principal, Kiana Williams. Williams was excited for the kids to have the opportunity to attend the time capsule ceremony and “leave a mark” on the new school grounds. She said “These kids were in Kindergarten when I started as the Principal. I think it’s special that they could leave their mark on the facility. I explained to them that they have the opportunity to encapsulate their memories that no other students get to do.”

“It was fun to see the kids enjoying themselves.”

Not only did the ceremony excite the students and staff, but also the CWC project team. Project Manager, Lauren Desiderio, said, “The purpose of the event was to give the students a chance to have a memory of the new school building and learn about the construction process, so it was fun to see the kids enjoying themselves and the meaning of the event.” The school is expected to open for the 2022-2023 school year.
