Intern Site Walk at The Langley School in Mclean, VA

The Summer interns participated in a superintendent site walk at The Langley School in McLean, VA. The interns toured the construction site and learned what different jobs entail from Superintendent, Eric Van Why, Project Manager, Nick Yager, and Assistant Superintendent, Alex Bruhn. The CWC interns gained insight from the project team and received insightful advice from them.

Intern, Amber Golden, who is working on The Langley School project this Summer said:

“Hearing about Nick and Eric’s career paths and how they earned their positions as a Project Manager and Superintendent was really interesting! I’ve really enjoyed seeing everything that goes on during the final stages of a project and learning everything that goes into finishing a building.”

Dallas said, “I love how CWC integrates the Summer interns into the company. The employees make a strong effort to get to know the interns which creates a great work environment.”

Multifamily Project at Howard University

Dallas Brooks is a project engineer intern working on CWC's 2711 Georgia Avenue multifamily project at Howard University. A rising junior at Howard University pursuing an architecture degree, Brooks chose this internship to gain experience and a perspective in construction and determine if she would like to take her architecture expertise to this direction. Last semester, Brooks took a construction course that taught her the fundamentals of the field. Eager to learn more, she chose to intern for Coakley & Williams Construction this summer. Brooks learned about the CWC Summer internship program through her Howard University classmate and CWC Summer intern, Solomon Alvarez-Gibson. Both interns study architecture and have had several classes together but also work at 2711 Georgia Avenue.

Project Manager, Emily Fredette said “Camp NAWIC is a great opportunity to expose young women to the possibilities of a future in construction. We had a great time assembling a mock bid with the campers to give them a bit of exposure to the "Preconstruction World". It's always exciting to share your passion of construction with the potential future of the industry, and show them how much more lies beyond the classroom.”

CWC Volunteers at the First Ever Camp NAWIC

CWC NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) members, and Summer interns volunteered in the first ever Camp NAWIC in collaboration with ABC Greater Washington and NAWIC at Thomas Edison High School of Technology in Sliver Spring, MD. The CWC team taught high schooler girls the preconstruction process and assisted them with a mock bid day activity.

CWC Marketing intern, Sophia Ford with Assistant Project Manager, Adriana Amaya at the Georgetown Visitation Lunch and Learn.

Recently graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Communication; construction was the last industry Sophia thought to enter. Fast forward to 10 weeks later, she feels she now has a clearer picture of what she wants her career to look like: “The internship program at CWC taught me so much about what goes on in this industry and allowed me to explore several avenues. I appreciated being able to practice skills I learned in the classroom and utilizing them in the professional world, such as writing blogs and social media engagement.” Sophia enjoyed being challenged by her team but was also encouraged and pushed to want to learn more. She enjoyed the various training events hosted for interns, her favorite being Soft Skills for Young Professionals. Hosted by Tyler Merrill, the training showcased the importance of networking and taught the interns the importance of professionalism. Going onto the project sites was another favorite part of her internship experience because it allowed her to see the hard work of her coworkers paying off. Sophia recommended CWC’s internship program to any student seeking an internship opportunity.
