AIR LINE PILOTS ASSOCIATION ACQUIRES HISTORIC UNITED TRANSPORTATION UNION BUILDING IN WASHINGTON, DC

Air Line Pilots Associates (ALPA) advocates for over 59,000 pilots at 35 US and Canadian airlines, making it the world’s largest airline pilot union. ALPA works to ensure that the airline industry remains safe and represents pilots’ views to congress and federal agencies. After years of searching for the perfect space, ALPA approved the acquisition of the United Transportation Union building in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood at 304 Pennsylvania Avenue, SW, Washington, DC. The space is intended as a government affairs office to ensure that ALPA pilots have easy access to policy decision-makers.

HISTORIC WITH MODERN ELEMENTS

CWC partnered with the KGA Studio Architects to create a modern office that fits in with the original architectural design of the neighborhood. Inspiration for the front façade originated in Art Deco design, following the lead of the nearby Library of Congress buildings, and included elements representing airplane engines and airflow. The front façade finishes include Indiana Limestone and custom-sized glass panels with aluminum framing. The rear brick was chosen to match the historic color of the building and adjacent buildings.

Conference rooms and breakout spaces are used for networking and for meetings.

PROXIMITY TO THE CAPITOL

The project team acquired necessary approvals from the Historic Preservation Review Board, U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, Advisory Neighborhood Commission Ward 6B, DC Department of Transportation, Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, and DC Water and Sewer Authority given the building’s proximity to the US Capitol. The new space includes a lobby, private offices, multipurpose room, conference rooms, open breakout meeting spaces, catering pantry, and bathrooms. The wall graphics are utilized on corridors to educate visitors about the airline industry and pilot profession.
