End of an Era

As we celebrate our 60+ year legacy of Building the DMV, it is with bittersweetness that we celebrate the retirement of Superintendent Rick Spivey. Rick joined us as a Carpenter in 1981, making him one of CWC’s longest-tenured employees in company history.

During his 40+ years with CWC, he worked on countless projects across all sectors, including Commercial, Multifamily, Hospitality, Education, Life Science, and Interiors. No task was too big or small for Rick; his work experience ranged from intricate renovations, like Congressional Country Club, to the massive, like the William A. Jones III Building.

“Spivey It”

Fellow long-time CWC Superintendent Jeff Gray, who joined in 1987, recalls Rick’s attention to detail: “Rick is a perfectionist. I always called on Rick when we had a large project that needed his detailed mindset. I could always count on him.” Jeff worked on several projects with Rick and commended his work ethic and commitment to the team. “When times got tough, we would say, ‘Rick, go out there and Spivey It!’ It always got done. He is a dear friend and a great colleague. A true team player.”

CWC Remembers Rick

To bid farewell to Rick, we recently celebrated his prolific career at an all-company meeting. In a speech detailing his many accomplishments, Managing Principal & Chief Operating Officer Greg Harraka said: “Along with Rick’s leadership and commitment to quality, he has been dedicated to the success of this organization. He has mentored many of our young Superintendents, who are now leading their own work.” In addition to recalling several examples of Rick’s leadership and work ethic, Greg emphasized his lasting impact on CWC: “He is a significant piece of the fabric of our corporate success, growth, and Best Place to Work culture.”

A Lasting Impact

Fortunately, we won’t have to look far to remember Rick’s legacy. His final project was the now-complete AC Hotel project in Bethesda, located just across the street from our main office. His hard work did not go unrecognized, as the project won a NAIOP DC|MD Award of Merit. Congratulations to Rick on a stellar career!
