Arlington Aquatics Center Recognized for Environmentally-Friendly Design

We are proud to announce that the award-winning Long Bridge Park Aquatics & Fitness Center in Arlington, VA, recently earned LEED Silver Certification by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)! We partnered with Page/ (Architect) on this large design-build project, which was delivered in the Fall of 2021.

Green Project Features

The building features a 50m competition pool with 1m, 3m, and 5m diving platforms

The unique “origami-shaped” building was carefully designed with the surrounding environment and ecosystem in mind. The large glass windows feature “bird-frit” to protect birds from the nearby Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary. Rain gardens facilitate stormwater management by collecting and filtering the water before it is released into the Potomac watershed. A chloramine capture system in the natatorium optimizes interior air quality. The windows are strategically placed and have calibrated glazing ratios to provide an optimal amount of daylight while preventing an unsafe glare on the water.

A New Amenity for Arlington

The project won an AIA|DC Chapter Design Award and Best New Facility by the VRPS in 2022

The 92,513 SF facility offers more than just a 50m competition pool. The building also includes a 4,000 SF leisure pool that is designed to be family-friendly, a fitness center that includes both a cardio area and weight room, a three-lane running track, locker rooms, and much more.

In 2022, the project earned two awards for its innovative design; a Chapter Award from AIA|DC and Best New Facility by the Virginia Recreation & Park Society (VRPS).
