DC Mayor Muriel Bowser cut the ribbon for Edgewood Recreation Center's Grand Opening Ceremony. This modernization project transformed the small, one-level field house into a multi-level, 16,000 sf, community hub with multi-generational programming and cultural activities in Ward 5 of Washington, DC.

Mayor Bowser said, "We invite you to a beautiful recreation center. What you see is a $21 million investment, and it is obvious that we are serious about parks and recreation in our city. We are the number one recreation system in the nation. This new recreation center has something for everyone."

Delano Hunter, Director of Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) said, “This is DPR's first ever rooftop urban garden, DPR's first ever natural gas generator which will be open to the community during power outages, and DPR's largest fitness center. The amenities include a full-sized gym, classrooms and multi-purpose rooms, and a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen. The outdoor amenities include an amphitheater, a waterfall and splash creek, new playground and courts, a community garden and on the site there are over 100 new trees."

Barbara Price, the Coakley & Williams Construction (CWC) Project Manager said, "It was an honor and pleasure to open the doors to Ward 5’s new Edgewood Recreation Center. To see the community so engaged and ready to use the new space inspires me."
