We celebrated the grand opening of The Potomac School's new athletic center, the Spangler Center, with representatives from CannonDesign, Clark Construction and all of the school’s generous donors.

“This building is a wonderful enhancement to our campus landscape,” said Dyana Conroy, the school’s chief operating officer. “It’s both uniquely beautiful and uniquely Potomac.” (Inside Nova)

The Spangler Center is a 70,000 sf athletic building with two stories. It consists of four basketball courts with one main feature court and an indoor running track which circulates around the gym from the second floor. The center also includes new locker rooms and bathrooms on the first level, as well as seven new competition squash courts.

Glue-laminated timbers and columns are present throughout the architecture of the space - in the 150 ft pedestrian bridge, exterior columns and interior columns around the basketball court - in order to bring in the nature of the surrounding woods. The second floor features a weight room, fitness center and multipurpose studio which cantilevers out looking into the forest.

Over 225 tons of steel were used for the new center. (Blog: Topping Out at The Potomac School)
