Building Education: Madeira School House Complete

About the Project

Coakley & Williams Construction (CWC) recently completed the interior renovation of a schoolhouse on The Madeira School’s campus. Despite multiple challenges, the work was completed in time for the school year. This 13,000 SF building was designed by Quinn Evans Architects and delivered in August 2020.

Some challenges on this project were the asbestos abatement due to the age of the school, and the new exterior geothermal and site utilities. To stay on schedule, the asbestos work took place during their two-week spring break, allowing the main project to start at the beginning of the summer. The geothermal and site utilities were challenging as there were two subcontractors coordinating in the same exterior trench to run their new lines from the dorm next door to the schoolhouse. This took multiple coordination meetings.

The project has had a great impact as the teachers enjoy the new flash to the interior. Despite the changes, many of the original features of the building remain intact. CWC is now working on a $20 million dollar design-build project for their new STEAM building, so the relationship continues to grow.
