Hood College | Shriner Hall

Architect: Becker Winston Architects
Location: Frederick, MD

Shriner Hall is one of Hood College's most historic residence halls, and its renovation required a careful balance between preservation and modernization. Working closely with the college and historic preservation consultants, Coakley & Williams Construction restored the building's historic character while transforming it into a comfortable, secure, and fully modern student residence.
The comprehensive renovation included restoration of original architectural features, replacement of aging building systems, life safety and accessibility upgrades, new air conditioning, security improvements, and reconfigured student amenities. Historic elements including wood flooring, plaster walls, masonry, windows, trim, and architectural detailing were meticulously restored or recreated using custom fabrication techniques to preserve the building's original character.
Construction was completed while the campus remained active, requiring careful planning, strict jobsite protocols, and close coordination to minimize disruption to students and college operations. Through proactive collaboration and creative problem-solving, the project was completed in time for students to return for the fall semester while preserving one of Hood College's most treasured campus landmarks.
