St. Aloysius Roof Replacement
A severe storm with high winds ravaged DC in April 2017. The roof of the historic St. Aloysius Church was no match for the high winds that swept though the area. Built in 1857, the Church at Gonzaga College High School is located on North Capitol Street in Northwest DC.
30% of the north and south face were damaged requiring a full replacement of the roof. Partnering with GBR Architects LLC and Wagner Roofing Company, Coakley & Williams Construction quickly got to work to ensure that the interior of the Church, and The Father McKenna Center below, would not be damaged. In order to preserve the original appearance of the historic church, stainless steel panels were selected to mimic the original design intent and match the surrounding buildings.
Demolition work included the removal of all metal roofing and substrates, all existing roof sheathing, and an existing metal and glazing tile skylight over the alter. Repair work included miscellaneous framing and anchoring repairs, additional supports, installation of new sheathing and a new standing seam metal roof, and top of wall masonry repairs and repainting. Over 16,000 square feet of metal-roof panels were installed to ensure that this beautiful historical landmark would be able to serve the community for generations to come.
