Columbia Heights will soon see the construction of the $134 million Carl F. West Estates, a nine-story, 179-unit affordable housing project at 1370 Harvard St. NW. Notably, 36 of these units are dedicated to "grandfamilies," where grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Led by the National Council on Black Aged Housing Development Corp. and DMA Development Co. LLC, the project aims to address the need for senior housing and supportive services for grandfamilies. Completion is expected in early 2026, with a construction team including Coakley & Williams Construction, JDC Construction, Joseph Browne Development Associates, and Wiencek + Associates Architects and Planners. The development includes a social service coordinator, services from nonprofit Miriam’s Kitchen, a wellness center, computer center, library, game room, activity areas, playgrounds, and 10,000 square feet of office space.
