St. Elizabeths East Men's Shelter Wins ABC Excellence Award | ABC Chesapeake Shores

ST. ELIZABETH’S EAST MEN’S SHELTER WINS EXCELLENCE AWARD AT ABC CHESAPEAKE SHORES

The Chesapeake Shores Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors selected the St. Elizabeths East Men’s Shelter project as an Excellence Award winner for the Institutional ($25 to $100 Million) category in its 2022 Excellence in Construction competition!

The new St. Elizabeths East Men’s Shelter replaced the existing homeless shelter at 2700 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in the Ward 8 Anacostia community located in Southeast Washington, DC. The Design-Build team consisted of Coakley & Williams Construction, in a joint venture with Blue Skye Construction, and architects, Wiencek + Associates. 30 Certified Business Enterprises worked on this project, as well as 280 District residents. This DC Department of General Services (DC DGS) project is unique because of its Historic and community aspect. The Historic St. Elizabeth’s Hospital East Campus is most known for treating soldiers during the Civil War.

ST. ELIZABETHS EAST MEN’S SHELTER IS AN OUTSTANDING ADDITION TO ANACOSTIA

In an outstanding addition to the Anacostia community, the new St. Elizabeths East Men’s Shelter is a low-barrier shelter program open to any male over the age of 18.

CONNECTIVITY: The location of the building allows tenants to be connected to the DC community while improving their wellness. It has a high walkability score of 98 with several transportation options available. This puts tenants and visitors at a 5-minute walk to 6 different bus lines, and a 20-minute walk to the Green metro line.

MISSION TO SUPPORT HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF ANACOSTIA COMMUNITY

St. Elizabeths East Men’s Shelter provides 380 beds daily, and the project mission was to develop a building that supports the health and wellness of the local community. It features a multipurpose room, health care clinic, and large kitchen that can be used for culinary learning. All roofs are designed as green roofs with seating. The new 85,600 sf three-winged building includes a reception area, administrative offices, staff break rooms, conference rooms, dining room, bathrooms, locker rooms, laundry room, security station, storage rooms, loading docks, and outdoor spaces. The new space also includes a teaching barbershop, clothing boutique, and computer room. These areas were intentional for developing retail training, barbershop training, and varying levels of professional development to provide further opportunities for homeless people to gain work and life experience.
